Screencast: How to Reset the Default Virtual Directories – Exchange 2003

There are cases when you need to reset the default virtual directories that are required to provide Outlook Web Access, Exchange ActiveSync, and Outlook Mobile Access services in Exchange Server 2003.
If you have messed up some of the virtual directories or OWA is hanging (working sporadically), resetting the directories the way it is demonstrated in the following video tutorial could resolve your problem.

Step 1 Here we create a backup of the default web site settings, which contains the virtual directories. We should have a good backup of the Web Site settings before we proceed.

Step 2 In the second step, we delete the six virtual directories.

Step 3 We have to delete the DS2MB key in the Metabase in order to force recreating the directories. Metabase explorer is available in IIS 6 resource kit. You can get just the Metabase explorer from here.

Step 4 Finally, we restart MS Exchange system attendant service and test OWA functionality.
