Storage - Database Size Limit Configuration and Management |

The 16 GB limit has been a serious restriction to the users of the standard version of Exchange server 5.5, 2000, and 2003 for a long time. It is a very common situation, especially nowadays, when 16 GB of storage does not seem much at all, to have a mailbox store which goes over the 16 GB limit and is automatically dismounted. The check against this licensing limitation for the standard edition is performed each time the mailbox store needs to physically grow and the penalty action takes place immediately when the limit is crossed.
The procedure for bringing back the exchange server was not a very pleasant one – enabling 1 GB additional space for the store through a registry change (which gives us 17 GB) just enough to mount it back and start cleaning.
Of course the enterprise edition has a much bigger limit imposed – 8000 GB. This was the main reason for many companies to consider upgrading to enterprise edition of Exchange which requires new Client Access Licenses and is an expensive upgrade.
Service Pack 2 for Exchange 2003 changes significantly this situation. The new licensing limit for the Standard edition is 75 GB, for the Enterprise edition – still 8000 GB.
Exchange admins fighting on a daily bases to keep up within the 16 GB can breathe a sigh of relief. The check against the licensing (for the standard edition) or administratively configured limits for the stores is performed on a daily bases at a time defined by the admin (versus every time the database needs to physically grow) and the penalty action does not take place immediately. As a matter of fact the first time the limit is crossed only a 9689 event is written in the application log. If we are still above the limit in 24 hours when the new regular check for the store size is performed a 9690 event is written and the store is dismounted.
It is interesting to know that you can mount the store immediately – no need to go through the usual hassle of enabling 1 GB additional space. Every 24 hours the storage check is performed and if the store does not pass the size check it is again dismounted.
In the following video tutorials you will be able to see how SP2 is installed and what are the new options for database size limit configuration and management.
